What is art but a recollection of combinations and reshapings of the same elements that were handed to us by the Renaissance and Romantic artists? A hyper-column that we keep improving on as time goes on, an anti-traditionalism that’s justified and majestic in its approach, but can also be prone to ruin and degradation from the Neoliberal-Capitalist way of what August Diehl as Karl Marx said in “The Young Karl Marx”: “Inspired prophets on one side and gaping idiots on the other!”? The story of the history of Modern Art, as is told, Goes Like This:
The Dadaists looked at modern bourgeois society with a broken lens, and made fun of it, dissolving and deterritorializing it with nonsensical patterns, all under the banner of a hobby horse: Dada. Before that, the Cubists and Futurists looked at the still lifes that were popular in the renaissance era of art, which is noted by critics as, the Enlightenment of art, far well known than the Greek era of art, an inch above the canvas, dismantled society, and glued it back together into cubed shapes, big and small, in a bit to freely express the One inside the power of the Cube. Before even that, the Impressionists painted pictures in a haze of beauty: they didn’t paint reality, but rather what they thought was reality, built from the actual reality.
However, can we expect this revolutionary potential from the Art of today, the “Mental Health Advocates” (ala @mossymorning), and corporate Abstracts of the world? Can we ever learn to trust the weirdcore/dreamcore trust fund aesthetic kids who look like they embody the scene culture of the 2000s? We cannot: but we can imagine new art, that escapes the Calarts style that was popular in the past, the neoliberal and petit-bourgeois that under the banner of the “Mental Health Advocate” gives out shit advice about body image and anxiety, the alt-kid obamaist positivism (a phrase that you might know very well if you have read the past things I wrote on this blog) that attempts to assimilate queerness into capitalism to pacify it.
The LGBT community of today is wearing Cisgender-Heterosexual masks to fit in the Cisgender-Heterosexual society, just like Franz Fanon describes black and brown people, and how they were wearing White masks to fit in a society of white Oneness and financial Capital. In Slave-America, the Slaves were given white names and were dressed in white clothing, but they were not recognized as an equal to the Slave-owners, who dismissively ignored them, their energy levels lower than the Slaves. Their history was ignored by 1700s/1800s whites, who treated them as Cattle and Subhuman. However, the house Negro-slaves were treated remarkably better than the field Negro-slaves, because they were the ones that acted more white.
One could argue that this is the situation that we are facing today. The branches of the LGBT community that successfully fit into norms of Cisgender-Heterosexuality are the white gay men, the white cisgender lesbians, and the trans/nb people who fit into Cavetownesque notions of neoliberal politics, apologizing when they did nothing wrong, and bending over for Cisgender-Heterosexuality when they need to. The branches of the LGBT community that didn’t were violently raided, ignored, and swept under the rug as demons that were preaching “Critical Race Theory”. The “negative” branch was the field Negro, and the “positive” branch was the House Negro.
It’s no secret that there is a conspiracy to destroy trans women. Trans men fit in the picture as well, but it’s mostly trans women that the Spectacle is targeting, through “meme magic” and the myth of “stochastic terrorism”. IFunny nerds in retaliation to 4chan raiding r/trans throwing up “kys”’s and “You’ll never be a real woman”’s. The internet is against transfemininity as it stands: It’s up to us to reformat the internet.
what does it mean for lgbt ppl to wear a "cisgender-heterosexual mask" when they mostly live out lives online? The internet allows for ostensibly safe spaces for maskless expression in comparison to irl, but the crux of this piece is that we need to reformat the internet.. Websites like ifunny, 4chan, etc have many bad ppl in them but also have minimal impact on the daily internetting of most trans people i would imagine. I think the masking which u refer to is more prominent irl, but is it up to us to reformat the real world?
